Frequently asked questions
How does Ghostscript PDF compression work?
Ghostscript resamples embedded images to a lower DPI, removes duplicate objects, optimises font subsets, and recompresses streams. For the "High" setting, images inside the PDF are reduced to 72 DPI (screen quality). For "Low", they stay at 150 DPI (print quality). Text and vector graphics are never degraded.
Is my PDF safe when I upload it?
Yes. Your file is uploaded over HTTPS, processed on our server, returned to you, and then permanently deleted. We have no system to read, store or share your documents. The entire process takes under 30 seconds.
Why might my PDF only get slightly smaller?
Text-only PDFs are already very compact — compression will have little effect. The biggest gains come from PDFs containing high-resolution images or scanned pages. If your PDF has lots of images, High compression can reduce it by 60–80%.
Can I compress password-protected PDFs?
Password-protected PDFs cannot be compressed. You would need to remove the password first using another tool, then compress here.
